While many pundits are busy asking questions to justify the choices made by Coach Clarence Seedorf on the players to play the crucial AFCON 2019 qualification game against the Comoros Islands, www.kick442.com looks at how these players performed over the weekend for their respective clubs.
In England Andre Zambo Auguissa had a solid game in midfield for Fulham against Liverpool at Craven Cottage. Zambo got a rare start under new manager Scott Parker, though Fulham lost the game, Zambo did not disappoint.
In the English FA Cup, Brighton and Hove Albion booked their place to the next round on penalties against Millwall after playing to a 2-2 draw. Unfortunately for Cameroon international left back Gaetan Bong, he had to ones more settle for a place on the bench for the entire game.
In Turkey, Coach Ersun Yunal’s Fenerbahce are in 13th position on the league table which is an unusual position for them. They earned a precious 2-1 win against Sivasspor over the weekend but Cameroon goalkeeper Idriss Kameni was no where to be found as it has been the case all season.
Kayserispor and league leaders Istanbul Bassaksehir played to a 1-1 draw, unfortunately, Kayserispor‘ coach Hikmet Karaman was forced to takeoff Cameroon international defender Jean Armel Kana Biyik because of an injury at the 37th minute after he picked up an injury and Real Betis’ Wilfred Kaptoum has been named as his replacement.
Kaptoum watched from the bench on Sunday as Barcelona came to Seville and beat Real Betis by 4 goals to 1. The former La Masia Student has featured 8 times for Betis this season.
Micheal Ngadeu-Ngadjui and Slavia Prague comforted their place at the top of League by beating Priban 0-2 away from home.
The Cameroon defender as usual was at the top of his game in the Slavia back line. He scored for his club in the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday evening and was in the UEFA Europa league Team of the week.
Mariupol earned a 1–1 draw away at Karpaty Lviv, Joyskim Dawa Tchokounte fail to make the match day squad. The 22 year old former AS Monaco youth team player is really struggling for game time with his club.
There was a hard fought 1-0 home win for Panionios against Xanthi FC. Yaya Banana and his compatriot Olivier Boumal played the entire game with Yaya seeing yellow at the 22nd minute.
27 year old Yaya has made 19 league Appearances this season and the yellow card was the defender’s 4th this term. While Olivier Boumal has appeared for the club on 8 ocassions in all competition since joining the club in January.
Jean Pierre Nsame has been called into the Lions den for the first time since Clarence Seedorf took over. He scored his 9th and 10th goals of the season in Young Boys of Bernes’ 2-2 draw with FC Basel 1893.
Nsame who was booked at the 50th minute made way for French striker Guillaume Hoarau at the 65th minute. His compatriot and teammate Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu who has been on the fringes of the national team played the entire game.
Ajax of Amsterdam lost 1-0 to AZ Alkmaar with Cameroon’s Andre Onana in goal as usual. Onana can hardly be blamed for the defeat. The 22 year old has now made 44 appearances for club this season and he has kept 23 clean sheets in those games featuring for club for 3553 minutes this term.
PSV Eindhoven have now opened up a five points gap at the top of the league over Onana’s Ajax.
Defender Jérôme Onguéné watched helplessly from the bench as FC Wacker Innsbruck earned a precious 2-0 win against Salzburg.
The 21 year old defender has featured 15 times i all competitions this season and scored 1 goal.
Joel Tagueu did not play any part in Maritimo’s 3-0 defeat away against FC Porto. Maritimo’s coach Petit overlooked the Cameroon striker who had scored 6 goals in 26 appearances in all competitions this season before the weekend game.
Bayern of Munich humiliated FC Mainz 05 6-0 over the weekend in the German Bundesliga. Cameroon midfielder Pierre Kunde Malong was summoned by coach Sandro Schwarz at the 46th minute of the game to take the place of Jean Paul Boetuis.
The midfielder has made 24 appearances in debut campaign in Germany.
Maccabi Haifa lost at home 0-2 to Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv. Georges Constant Mandjeck did not make coach Marco Balbul’s team sheet.
Mandjeck’s teammate and compatriot Ernest Mabouka Massoussi made the task easier for the visitors when he was sent off at the 43rd minute with Maccabi Haifa already a goal down.
Petrus Boumal did his best for the entire game, but his best was not enough to prevent a home defeat for URAL against CSKA Moscow as they were beaten at home 0-1. Boumal was booked at the 20th minute of the game.
It was not a surprise to see Fabrice Ondoa on the bench in KV Oostende’s 0-2 defeat against Anderlecht. Sporting Director Hugo Broos and his technical staff maintained their confidence in William Dutoit over the Cameroon shot-stopper.
Michael Preud’homme has always counted on Cameroon defender Fai Collins. Fai was in defense in Standard Liege’s entertaining 4-3 win against Waasland Beveren. The Cameroon right back played the entire game.
Cameroon striker Jacques Zoua was an unused substitute in Astra Guirgui’s 0-2 home defeat against FC FCBB. Coach Constantin Enache has not been able to get the best out of the Cameroon striker or maybe the striker’s best is not enough to get goals anymore in competitive football.
Olympique of Marseille lost the French Classico to PSG by 3-1. For the Cameroonian viewers the must have been a feeling of disappointment irrespective of which team they were supporting. Both Cameroonians in the books of both clubs did not play any part in the game. Eric Maxime Choupo Moting was an unused sub for runaway league leaders PSG while Clinton Njie did not even get a place on the bench for Rudi Garcia’s Marseille.
Cameroon will have to face the Comoros without Stephane Bahoken who scored that crucial equalizer in Moroni. The striker was injured in Angers 0-0 draw with Amiens. Coach Stephane Moulin will be hoping to get his top striker back as fast as possible. He has already scored nine goals this season, his personal best in the French top flight.
Ambrose Oyongo Bitolo was played the entire game in Montpellier’s 3-2 loss away against Lyon.
The Cameroon defender played as a left winger and showed all his pace, trickery and crossing abilities. He is a player Michel Der Zakarian counts on every weekend.
Christian Bassogog and Henan Jianye were not in action over the weekend in the Chineses Super League. The 2017 AFCON best player opened his goal scoring account last weekend.
Karl Toko Ekambi is not in Seedorf’s team for this game. He was in fine form against Rayo Vallecano. Villareal best Rayo 3-1 with a five star performance from their Cameroon forward who scored his 13th and 14ths goals in all competitions this season. Toko had a very complementary partnership with Nigerian forward Samuel Chukweze.
