Cameroon senior women’s national handball team, the Handball Lionesses on Friday December 3, 2021 picked a disappointing 40-17 defeat on the hands of the women’s team of the Handball Federation of Russia in their opening group B game of the 2021 World Women’s Handball Championship in Spain.
The team’s near shambolic performance in the later minutes of the game despite an impressive start that saw the side leading 6-4 in the first ten minutes, came back to collectively overshadow the Lionesses’ individual efforts against the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Women’s Handball silver medalists.
Despite the team’s sweeping defeat, the side’s goalkeeper, Isabelle Noelle Mben Bediang got voted as Player of the Match for her excellent displays during the game in Lliria on Friday night.
The goalkeeper plying her trade for Antalya Konyaalti in the Turkish women’s top flight handball championship, made brilliant saves during the game including successful blocks in several glaring goal scoring chances for the Russians led by the likes of the extremely charging Luliia Markova of the Russian side.
The 32-year-old went against all odds to contain the mounting pressure of the Russians, slowing down actions of Antonia Skorobogatchenko and mates even as the team went down by 17-10 at half time and were over 15 goals down with barely minutes to the end of the encounter.
Cameroon will face Serbia at 8:30pm on Sunday December 5 in their second game of the competition.
The Handball Lionesses lost to the Serbians in 2017 during the 23rd edition of the World Women’s Handball World Cup in Germany.
The team will be looking forward to bettering their performances during the games including star keeper Noelle Mben Bediang who will be yet again in charge of stopping the Serbs who overpowered Poland in their opening game to go top of the group.
Karichma Kaltoume Eko who was one of Cameroon’s brightest shining stars in the opening game, having scored four of the Lionesses 18 games against Russia will equally be expected to improve her goal tally and push the girls to their debut win in the planetary women’s handball tournament.
