Cameroon senior women’s handball team, the Handball Lionesses have been eliminated from the on-going 25th edition of the Women’s Handball World Cup currently taking place in Spain.
The team was sent parking from the competition by Poland who recorded a 33-19 goal victory over the Lionesses on Tuesday December 7, 2021.
The side put up some spirited fights at the start of the game but got overpowered the ravaging Polish outfit who made used of their rich experiences to take a 9 goal lead at half time with the score board at 16-7 in favour of the Europeans.
The Handball Lionesses led by the likes of France based star lady, Karichma Ekoh bounced back in the second segment of the game with more determined approach, recording a series of successive goals but failed to contain the weights of the 2013 and 2015 semifinalists.
The Central African’s 12 second half goals were not enough as the Polish emerged victories 33-19 goals at full time to book the last ticket to the main group stages of the competition.
Though eliminated from the full competitive phase of the tournament, the Handball Lionesses will now descent to the Presidential Cup stage of the competition, a stage where the various bottom placed teams of the preliminary round will face each other in a round robin format to decide the bottom classification rankings of the planetary women’s handball festival.
Karichma Ekoh’s world class displays honored.
Despite Cameroon’s elimination from the tournament, Cameroon lead lady at the competition, Karichma Ekoh Kaltoume got distinguished at the end of the game.
The France based star got named the Player of the Match after scoring 9 of Cameroon’s 19 goals against Poland on the night, an over-all highest in the game.
The 9 goals took the energetic Lionesses’ lady’s goal tally in the International Handball Federation organized event to 20 goals in three matches.
The ESBF Bensancon star who is Cameroon’s top scorer in the tournament, netted 4 goals against Russia in Cameroon’s opener and spanked in another 7 during the team’s second outing against Serbia last Sunday.
Karichma Ekoh has been pulling off excellent performances for Cameroon since choosing the Handball Lionesses instead of France early this year.
She won two Player of the Match awards while playing for Cameroon during the 2021 Women’s AFCON in Cameroon.
Her Player of the Match award against Poland is Cameroon’s second of the competition in Spain after goalkeeper Isabelle Noelle Mben received the same distinction after the Handball Lionesses opener against Russia late last week.
