The Ethiopian national football team defeated record Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winners, Egypt 2-0 at the Bingu National Stadium, Lilongwe in the 2023 AFCON Qualifiers on Thursday.
Egypt played the game without Liverpool forward, Mohamed Salah and were stunned by two first-half goals.
Dawa Hotessa opened the scoring for Ethiopia in the 21st minute.
This was followed by the second goal from Shimelis Bekele off an assist from Amanuel Gebremichael in the 39th minute.
Following the sweet victory over Egypt, the President of the Ethiopian Football Federation, Mr. Esayas Jira sent a message to the team.
“We are proud that you have finished this game which is more meaningful than football with victory. We will discuss with the Executive Commitment and give 2 million birr prize to team members for today’s victory and the previous match.”
Ethiopia with the victory moved to the top of Group D with three points from two games as the other three teams in the group (Malawi, Guinea, and Egypt) also have three points each.
