The Leone stars of SierraLeone were held to a 2-2 by Guinea Bissau who were short of one player, in their second 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Monday, June 13, at the General Lansana Conte Stadium were they played host to the latter.
The host looked to bounce back from an opening defeat to the super Eagles of Nigeria. While the visitors were out to make a back to back wins in their qualifying campaign after beating Sao Tome and Principe 5-1 victory at the Stade Adrar in Agadir.
Guinea-Bissau took a 2-0 lead over Sierra Leone through Jorginho who bagged a brace in the 49th and 52nd minutes of play before.
Five minutes after the second goal, Sana’s unpardonable foul on opponent caused him a straight red card, thereby reducing his side, Guinea Bissau to 10 men.
The Leone stars took advantage of that to pull a goal back at the 77th minute of play, a goal from Augustus Kargbo.
Musa Kamara netted the equalizing goal two minutes to the end of the encounter to back a point for the Leone stars they saw their two-game winning run snapped following a 2-1 loss to Nigeria.
Guinea-Bissau are now on four points, two points behind leaders and sit second in Group A while Sierra Leone are third with just one point.
The next international action for Guinea Bissau will be in September when they face Nigeria in a top clash that could determine the leader of Group A.
Meanwhile Sierra Leone will play host to São Tomé and Principe on September 19, 2022.
The Leone Stars returned to the continent’s flagship competition in the 33rd edition for the first time since their second participation in South Africa 1996 and looks forward to their fourth participation after failing to cross pass the group stage of the competition early this year in Cameroon.
Though managed to eliminate the big names like Algeria and Ivory Coast from the competition before going down after they came in as underdogs in the competition.
Both teams are drawn in Group A of the qualifying campaign alongside Nigeria and Bottom placed São Tomé and Principe.
