The West Africa Zone A (WAFU-A) Zonal Qualifiers for the 2022 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League kicked off in Liberia on Wednesday with the opening game ending in a 1-1 draw.
Holders, AS Mande of Mali forced host, Determine Girls of Liberia to a 1-1 draw as the WAFU-A Zonal Qualifiers commenced in a bid to produce the sole representatives of the region at the main tournament.
After a goalless first half, Determine Girls opened the scoring in the 80th minute from Sayee’s strike.
In the 90th minute, AS Mande equalised when a quick free kick located Fatoumata Doumbia whose half volley inside the box find the back of the net to the disappointment of Determine Girls.
Determine Girls goalkeeper, Bountou Sylla was voted the Woman of the Match.
AS Mande will next face USPA of Senegal on Friday while Determine Girls will play USPA in the last game of the Zonal Qualifiers on Sunday.
The team with the highest points on Sunday will emerge as WAFU-A Zone Champions and will represent the zone at the 2022 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League to be hosted by Morocco in October.
AS Mande of Mali won the maiden edition last year with seven (7) points after three (3) games.
AS Dakar (Senegal) with 6 points, Determine Girls (Liberia) with 3 points, and Seven Stars (Cape Verde) with 1 point also participated in the 2021 edition of WAFU-A Zonal Qualifiers.
AS Mande finished bottom of Group A at the maiden TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League with a point behind Hasaacas Ladies (Ghana), Malabo Kings (Equatorial Guinea), and Wadi Degla (Egypt).
