The indomitable lionesses of Cameroon will take on The Scorpions of Gambia, in the second round of qualifiers for the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2022. This after The Scorpions played a one all tie against Liberia, but sailed through on goal aggregate.
Gambia defeated Sierra Leone 2#0 in the away game at the Antoinette Tubman stadium, Monrovia thanks to goals from Buwaru and Joof.
In the return leg game played on Monday October 25, at the independence stadium in Bakau, Fatoumata Kanteh i Cham opened scores for Gambia just 23 minutes after kick-off, but a 54th minute goal from Liberia’s Macauley, meant both teams shared the spoils, but Gambia went through to the last round of qualifiers, with a 3#1 aggregate score.
For the indomitable lionesses of Cameroon, they recorded a 3#0 aggregate win over the Central African Republic in a two legged fixture played at the Douala Japoma stadium.
Nchout Njoya Ajara’s late winner in the away fixture had already put Cameroon in an advantage position in the tie, but goals from Grace Ngock Yango and a sumptuous free kick from Éliane MamboLamo Bodolo, made sure that the lionesses ended all hopes a potential comeback from the Central Africans.
Coach Bubacarr Jallow will be looking to create an upset, as The Scorpions are in search of their first ever participation in the final phase of the AWCON. In the build up to the 2018 competition, their hopes were shattered by the super Falcons of Nigeria and they face yet another daunting task against one of Africa’s best, the indomitable lionesses.
The lionesses on their part have finished second in the AWCON four times, in their 12 appearances.
