It’s no longer news that six clubs will contest for the 2020/2021 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title and two continental tickets (Total CAF Women’s Champions League) at Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, from April 19, 2021.
Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Rivers Angels, Edo Queens, FC Robo Queens, and Sunshine Queens will fight for two Total CAF Women’s Champions League tickets.
In preparation for intending goal feasts in Ijebu Ode, www.kick442.com presents the top goal scorers of the six clubs.
Monday Gift (FC Robo Queens), 8 Goals
Monday Gift remained the only player to score a hat-trick in the 2020/2021 NWFL Premiership season. She achieved this on December 16, 2020, as FC Robo Queens defeated Osun Babes 3-1. The feat and more goal-scoring exploits earned her a call-up by Super Falcons gaffer, Randy Waldrum for the Turkish Women’s Cup where she scored against Equatorial Guinea. Her league goals came against Osun Babes (3), Pelican Stars (1), DreamStar FC Ladies (1), Rivers Angels (2), and Abia Angels (1). Her goals singlehandedly handed Rivers Angels their first and only defeat of the season.
Charity Reuben (Bayelsa Queens), 8 Goals
After her return to Bayelsa Queens from Kazygurt where she featured in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Charity Reuben with eight goals during the regular season proved to be the leading force for Bayelsa Queens’ attack line alongside 2019 league top goalscorer, Anjor Mary.
Charity Reuben scored her first goal of the season as Bayelsa Queens defeated FC Robo Queens 1-0 on December 23, 2020. Since then, she didn’t turn off her goal-scoring tap with more goals against Edo Queens (2), Abia Angels (1), Ibom Angels (2), Osun Babes (1), and Royal Queens (1).
Bayelsa Queen’s top goalscorer when they last won the league in 2018 will be optimistic that her return will propel the Restoration Girls to reclaim the league title.
Elizabeth Zirike (Edo Queens), 5 Goals
The well-traveled league player showed that her goal-scoring boots are still sharp with five goals for Edo Queens. The first of her five goals came on December 23, 2020, as her goal salvaged a 1-1 draw for Edo Queens with Rivers Angels at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City. She scored more goals against Nasarawa Amazons (1), Bayelsa Queens (2), and Osun Babes (1) to take her tally to five.
Dominance Odubanjo (Delta Queens), 4 Goals
Dominance Odubanjo started the season with two goals as Delta Queens defeated DreamStar FC Ladies 4-1. She added another goal on December 16, 2020, as Delta Queens suffered their first league defeat (6-2 to Rivers Angels). It took six more games for Dominance to get her fourth goal on March 3, 2021, as Delta Queens pipped Edo Queens 1-0. The goals of the attacker will be key for her side in the Super Six.
Maryann Ezenagu (Rivers Angels), 4 Goals
The former Delta Queens player proved her transfer mettle with four goals, the highest by any Rivers Angels player this season ahead of Deborah Abiodun (3) and Vivian Ikechukwu (3). A goal in the course of Rivers Angels 6-2 bashing of Delta Queens on December 16, 2020, was followed by a goal each against FC Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and Bayelsa Queens. She scored three of her four goals in the course of Rivers Angels’ last four games.
Seun Fakunle (Sunshine Queens), 3 Goals
Seun scored her first goal for the Betty Babes as they were defeated 2-1 by Bayelsa Queens in the opening game of the season on December 9, 2020. She followed that up with goals against Confluence Queens (1), and Abia Angels (1). Much might not be expected from Fakunle at the Super Six given the fact that any player can score for Wemimo Mathew tutored Sunshine Queens as their 14 goals came from nine different players.
The winner of the top goalscorer prize will be determined at the end of the Super Six in Ijebu Ode as it is expected that these players will score more goals to help their sides clinch a Total CAF Women’s Champions League ticket.
