With the 2021 edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope getting underway in February, 3 Test races which serve as qualifiers for the Race of Hope have been programmed for January 10, and 23, 2021.
On January 10 two test races have been slated in 2 Regions of the country. In the Centre Region, athletes are expected to ascend the Mont Beedi opposite the General Hospital in Douala from 7 am.
While in the South Region on the same day, athletes are expected to challenge Mount Ebolowa, which offers a host of touristic and hospitality attractions to the athletes.
Last year Godlove Gabsibuin from Nwa sub division, Donga Mantung division came in the first position. He covered the distance in 4hour 36 minutes 06 second. The 33-year-old Gabsibuin emerged champion in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018.
Godlove Gabsibuin clinched his fifth title becoming one of the most successful male athletes of the race last year after beating Ndunguh Simplice, and Elvis Nsahbinla to the second and third positions respectively in the men category. He will hopefully be going for a sixth title this year.
It is still uncertain if Mbacha Eric will participate in this year’s edition of the Race of Hope, having sat out the 2020 edition due to threat on his life. In 2020, Eric participated and won the Helsinki Marathon in Finland.
In the female category, Tata Carine from Kumbo in Bui Division came in the first position, the third consecutive time she is winning the race after doing so in 2018, 2019 and 2020. She will be the lady to beat in 2021 as she looks for four consecutive titles this year.
The then 21-year-old outclassed her competitors with Kitan Mildred, aged 24 at the time and Wirngo Kpuufanla who emerged second and third respectively.
The prize money on offer for both senior male and female categories stands at FCFA 10 million.
