Cameroon senior women’s basketball team has beaten Senegal to finish third in the 26th edition of the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship staged in Cameroon.
The Basketball Lionesses defeated bitter rivals Senegal 53-49 points in a thrilling third and fourth place classification game of the competition to end the championship ranked third as Bronze medalists.
The win also ensured the team led by Captain Ramses Lonlack successfully revenged its 2015 collapse to the West African Lionesses in the finals of the 23th edition held in Yaounde when the Senegalese demolished Cameroon 83-66 to clinch their record extending 11th title in the competition.
Match reports
The Basketball Lionesses put up an incredible fight to silence the Senegalese at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex.
Ramses Akono and group faced a fiercely determined and confident Senegalese team who made nonsense of Coach Ahmed Mbombo Njoya’s game plans to lead 27-22 at half time.

But the Lionesses, poised to correct the errors committed mainly by their elder sisters 6 years ago, stepped up their game, gathering direct points and a series of rebounds against the near panicking West Africans to record a hard earned win and revenge against the 11 time holders.
Brighter future awaits at last
With the win, Coach Ahmed Njoya will feel relatively excited and hopeful, having successfully guarded the team to a third place finish in his debut major competition as lead trainer.
Despite having missed out on the chance to qualify for one of the qualification tournaments to the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Sydney, Australia next year, the group mostly youthful with an average of about 24 years old, pundits and basketball experts say, have brighter futures with the Senior Women’s basketball side of Cameroon ad their respective present and future clubs.
