The Catholic University Sports Academy, CUSA, has qualified for the second round of the 2021 SW Cup of Cameroon Qualifiers. The team from Buea defeated Future Stars Sports Academy, FUSSA this Thursday, March 4 at the Tiko Town Green Stadium in a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
A penalty kick from Christian Bruno at the 81mins gave the Catholic University Sports Academy the much-needed victory.
The opening minutes of play saw FUSSA, who put out a young squad, taking the pressure to the more experience CUSA side. Luma Sylvanus had the first opportunity for FUSSA though his strike was deflected for a corner kick.
It took CUSA 6mins to get their head in the game as their first chance came from Michael Etoe who had his free-kick just above the crossbar.
Juslem Enow then had a chance at the 22mins but he shot wide. FUSSA who had been pecked back into their half slowly found their foot in the game. Goalkeeper Kelechi Desmond proved to be the savour of FUSSA as he deflected so many chances that CUSA had to score in the game.
Both sides headed into half time with the game equally balanced between CUSA and FUSSA at 0-0.
The second half began more promising for both sides as they had various opportunities to get the first goal. Njuma had nice control of the ball but his finishing proved a problem as CUSA mounted pressure for the opening goal.
As the pressure mounted, FUSSA conceded a penalty kick, thought that proved contentious as the second assistant referee had raised his flag for an offside. The Coach of FUSSA subsequently entered the field of play to plead his side’s innocence as the penalty was rescinded. Coach Jacques Marcel was subsequently shown a red card.
With the tie almost heading to a penalty kick, Emmanuel Agbor conceded a penalty kick at the 80mins, which Christian Bruno stepped up a gave CUSA the lead.
And that is how the game ended as CUSA qualified for round two. The draws for the next round is expected on Monday, March 8.
