French Ligue 1 side AS Saint Etienne have issued a release stating that they will not release their players for international duty out of Europe in the upcoming international window.
The move directly affects coach António Conceição’s plans as the gaffer included Saint Etienne duo Harold Moukoudi and Yvan Neyou in his 25 man squad for the games against Cape Verde Island and Rwanda in Pria and Douala respectively.
Saint Etienne joins a number of European Clubs that have yielded to FIFA’s call of Club’s taking extra precaution on the release of players during this Covid-19 pandemic period and to an extent make release of players not mandatory.
Moukoudi has been a mainstay in Cameroon’s defense since debuting against Tunisia in October 2019.
Midfielder Neyou is new to international football, having Cameroon’s first call in October 2020, he told Conceição he is ready. Unfortunately Saint Etienne is standing on his way to the den with Harold Moukoudi.
Cameroon face Cape Verde away in match-day five of the qualifiers on March 24 before returning home to confront Rwanda for Match-day six four days later in Japoma-Cameroon.
The five times African champions are leaders of group J with 10 points, needing just a point from the two games to qualify for the tournament of the competition on home soil.
