Despite losing 3-1 to Côte d’Ivoire in Abidjan earlier today, Ethiopian National Football team will play in next year’s AFCON for the first time since 2013 after Madagascar were held to a goalless draw by Niger in the other group match in Masaina.
Ethiopia found themselves trailing as early as the second minute into the game in Abidjan when Serge Aurier floated a neat delivery into the box off a corner that was converted by Willy Boly.
And in the 17th minute, they were 2-0 down AC Milan’s Franck Kessie scoring from the penalty spot although they had a glimpse of comeback hope in the 73rd minute when Kebede tapped in Shemekit Gugesa’s cross but their hope got dashed 3 minutes later as Kouasi scored to make it 3-1 for the Ivorians.
In Masaina, Madagascar needed to win against visitors Niger to reach their second successive AFCON finals, but the goalless draw meant Barea missed the chance, leaving Ethiopia with the second group ticket.
