South West Regional League outfit Victoria United FC alias OPOPO has set a goal of going more than the Interpool competition for this year. Coach Njoku Barnabas will be at the dugout for the team this year after he was appointed as the new gaffer of the club.
Njoku Barnabas has loads of experience having coached at the regional level and into Elite 1. Before he was appointed lead trainer of Victoria United he previously served as an interim trainer for Djiko FC. In the Regional level, Coach Barnabas has had stints with Buea United FC, and Maumu Youths, whom he almost took to the national interpools but for polemics to dash that dream.
“We are already eight weeks into preparations and everything is going on well and as planned. I am happy with the motivation of my group. Everyone is focus individually, collectively, and administratively,” Coach Njoku Barnabas told kick442.com after having a training session at the Limbe Community Field.
When pressed on the composition of his group Coach Barnabas if a club has ambition then they should be ready for anybody. To him, they have an idea of all the teams presently in their group and he is working towards that.
“We are going to take game after game. For Options Sports, it is a team we already have an idea of how they play as we have played them already during our preparatory matches. For what I am seeing from my guys in training I am very optimistic that we are going to have a good opening game,” Coach Barnabas told kick442.com.
Victoria United have struggled in the past to get that much talked about Elite Two ticket in the South West Region. The team has previously represented the region at countless times in the mini interpool and the national interpool but failed to get a spot into Elite Two. To that effect Coach Njoku Barnas said categorically “that is what I am here”. “If I am here I think I have something to offer. I am here because I have my ambitions. With the players and administration I have at hand I believe we are up to the task. Like any ambitious club in the region, the goal is to qualify this club first to the mini interpool and from there we will take it forward,” Coach Barnabas told kick442.com
Kingsley Tabot, captain of Victoria United FC told kick442.com: “So far so good we have been preparing for the championship. Due to our preparations, our goal is to go beyond the national interpool and into the Elite 2 level. We have tried in previous editions but we have not been able but with the level of preparedness with the new coach, and management, we believe we can bring that much elusive ticket to the Elite Two.”
It should be recalled that the 2020/2021 football season in the South West Region is scheduled to get underway this Sunday, December 12, 2020. Victoria United is placed in a tricky group that contains Best Stars Academy of Limbe and Option Sports. Kick442.com understands that preliminary information holds that victoria United FC will face Options Sports in Matchday One in Group D.
