2020-2021 CAF CC group stage pairings completed with Cotonsport in an exciting group
The Confederation of African football, CAF, has conducted the pairing of the 16 Clubs left in its 2020-2021 secondary interclub competition.
Tuesday, February 22 was a busy day in Cairo as CAF took time out to group the 16 clubs left in the competition into four groups of four each.
The exercise produced some exciting groups snd potentially top class fixtures with Cameroon’s representative Cotonsport drafted in the same pool B as defending champions RS Berkane of Morocco, Algeria’s JS Kabylie under the guidance of former Cotonsport and Indomitable Lions of Cameroon trainer Dennis Lavagne. Zambia’s Napsa stars who were conquerers of Gor Mahia in a controversial fashion complete group B dubbed group of death by a handful of pundits.
Group has 2003 CAF Champions League winners Enyimba of Abia-Nigeria who knocked out local rivals Rivers United FC in the final playoffs tie. They will compete for a quarter-final spot with Tunisia’s ES Setif, Orlando Pirates of South Africa and Al Ahli Benghazi of Lybia.
Ten times Tunisian league and cup winners who were winners of the Confederation cup in 2006 and 2015 are in group C alongside winners on three occasions CS Sfaxien of the same country. Burkina Faso’s Salistas FC who dropped from the champions league and Senegal’s AS Jaraaf in their 5th appearance in the competition.
Zambia’s Nkana FC who haven’t lost a CAF interclub competition game at home since their debut in 1976 are in group D with Pyramids FC of Egypt who have never lost an away game in the competition since they first came in 2019. They will compete with Morocco’s Raja Atletic Club of coach Jamal Sellami who were winners of the competition in 2018.
Tanzania’s Namungo SC or Angola’s Primeiro Agosto complete group D.
The Group stages of the competition gets underway on Wednesday, March 10 with each Club expected to play six games home and away and each of the two group leaders to qualify for the the quarter-finals.
Cotonsport will be hoping to better their best run in recent times in the competition as they reached the semi-finals in the 2013-2014 season but were knocked out by everlasting foes Al Ahly of Cairo Egypt.
