Indomitable Lions’ and Ajax of Amsterdam’s last man standing Andre Onana and Liverpool’s Cameroon defender Joel Matip are in the African team of the year for 2019.

Onana won the domestic double with Ajax and reached the 2019 UEFA Champions League final, which Ajax lost to Matip’s Liverpool.

The 23-year-old Cameroon goalkeeper also finished seventh on the Yachine Awards, an award for the best goalkeeper in the world.

He was part of Cameroon’s under-performing team at the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Liverpool’s central defender Joel Matip turned his back on Cameroon since 2014, but his club displays have been hugely impressive, despite some injury worries.

Senegal tops the list with three players. Their Napoli rock solid central defender Kalidou Koulibaly partners Matip in central defense, while their hard working PSG midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye joins Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez and Morocco’s Hakim Ziyech in midfield. Sadio Mane completes a front three of Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Gabon’s Pierre-Emmerick Aubameyang.

Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Ivory Coast’s Serge Aurier completes the back four, alongside Matip and Koulibaly.
