While European competition is still suspended at the quarter-final stage due to the health crisis, the UEFA Women’s Champions League could end at the end of August in a final tournament in Spain. In any case, this is what the Spanish newspaper Marca claims.
Nothing is official yet. And yet Marca says it, the final phase of the Champions League 2019-2020 should take place at the end of August in Spain. According to the sports newspaper, it should take place from August 21 to 30 behind closed doors in two stadiums in the Basque Country, Anoeta in San Sebastian and San Mamés in Bilbao.
As a reminder, seven games have yet to be played and the final table has already been drawn since the draw last November. The winner of Arsenal-PSG will face that one of Olympique Lyon and Bayern while Atletico Madrid and Barça will compete for the right to face in the semi-finals Glasgow City or Wolfsburg. The two French clubs could, therefore, face each other in the semi-finals but remain physically unknown for the time being.
While the women’s Bundesliga has resumed, the D1 Arkema (French Women’s League) has been definitively interrupted, leaving the Parisian and Lyonnais players without competition for almost three months. Especially for the Rhodaniennes who will face the German from Wolfsburg, being competitive for such a high-level match after such a long break will not be an easy task. It is with this in mind that Jean-Michel Aulas announced the holding of a preparation tournament soon. Like their male counterparts, Olympique Lyon girls will be able to gauge themselves before finishing their European journey.
