For the first time since their creation 58 years ago, the Abakwa boys of Bamenda have been crowned champions of Cameroon thus landing their first piece of Silverware.
The Northwest outfit upsetted bookmakers odds to collect the crown from last year’s winner UMS of Loum outsmarting Cotonsport and Colombe Dja.
Here are some top statistics about the club and it’s actors during what has turn out to be a historic 2019-2020 season.
1)The trophy is the first for the club created 58 years ago.
2)PWD of Bamenda becomes the first Northwest club and the second club from the English extraction of Cameroon to win the Cameroon Elite One championship following the path created by Tiko United in 2009.
3)PWD won 14, registered a draw in 8 and lost just 6 of their 28 games over the course of the season.
4)PWD’s Leon Boyomo ended the season as the best scorer for the club and in the championship with 11 goals. He won the golden boots with the same number of goals as last year’s winner Kamilou Daouda and he becomes the first PWD player to win the golden boots in the league one.
5)PWD forward Boyomo Leon scored in a record 8 consecutive games this campaign. He broke Marius Mouandilmadji’s 2018 record of scoring in 6 consecutive games.
6)Goalkeeper Zame Rodrique of PWD kept 7 consecutive clean sheet in the season and 10 overall. He holds the record of consecutive clean sheets for the the season as only Anye Derick Fru of Panthère Nde went 7 games with conceding.
7) Winning the earns PWD a chance to return to the CAF inter-club competitions calendar for the first time in 16 years. In their last appearance in a CAF organized competition was in 2004 and that year they defeated Congolese giants TP Mazembe in Douala.
8)PWD joins a list of very few clubs to win the league in their second season in the topflight. Tiko United in 2009,UMS of Loum in 2016 and Eding Sport de la Lekie in 2018 all won the title in their second season in the topflight championship.
9)18-year-old Nchindo John Bosco is arguably PWD’s most productive player of the season with 5 goals scored and 8 assists provided.
10)Nchindo John Bosco is the only player to win a penalty, assist and scored in the same game in the championship this season. He achieved that against Feutcheu FC.
11)PWD won 8 of their 13 games as the away side. This means the club won more games away from home.
12)Coach David Pagou of PWD has won his first major trophy as head coach with PWD.
The club’s success can’t be completely described without mentioning the role of the club’s president, Pascal Abunde who got the entire staff of the club work together to achieve this.
