Cotonsport of Garoua have another lethal finisher in the making on their books at least on the evidence of happenings in the early days of the 2020-2021 season.
22-year old Lambert Ngueme Araina looks set to take it to the next level with his performances this season.
So what’s behind the 22-year old Cameroonian forward’s rise to fame performance and become the new Kamilou Daouda or Marius Mouandilmadji?
Although he really came to the attention of the worldwide football audience only toward the end of 2019, Araina, had been a hot topic on the Cameroonian scouting circuit for quite some time especially with his output in the North Regional championship.
Cotonsport tried in two windows and finally had their man in the close season window of 2018.
Though it wasn’t the most comfortable start to life with top strikers like Francis Elimbi, Kamilou Daouda, Joseph Kombous and Aime Mangolo at the Club, Araina settled for cameos mostly coming on when the rest of the team had given their all.
The forward spent a year in the cold but in November 2019 when PWD traveled to Garoua for a league game, Araina announced his presence, scoring four of the five goals as Cotonsport win five-nil.
Despite this brilliant performance early in the season, he remained understudy to the big guns that season. For close to a year he was not playing as much as he wanted.
The year spent in the fringes gave Araina the ideal mentality at the ideal platform to adapt and learn at the stricter, but still manageable, ultra-professional Cotonsport set-up. And although he surely would have liked to have been more involved in matches, he learned from the more established players.
Though they were offers in the close season with a loan move nearly triggered, choosing to stay at Cotonsport over potentially moving to more game time destinations has proven to be a great move by Araina.
The quick and powerful forward has acement his growing international recognition through the CAF CC this season. Cotonsport is the reference for attacking football and this Cotonites team, with its quick and attack-minded wide players, intelligent attacking midfielders and wide forwards whose movement creates space, are the perfect conditions in which a powerful and dynamic centre-forward can prosper.
Araina has taken full advantage of this with the peak of his performance being a 34 minutes hat-trick in a domestic league game against TKC earlier this season.
The forward has gone on to score in all four league appearances this term and scored 11 goals in 14 games in all competitions.
Though Kamilou Daouda is back in training for the first time in weeks, Araina looks like the season decider for Cotonsport havin smashed his best season tally since arriving the Club.
