Friday 24th may 2019 was a day to remember for Rayon Sports FC in the Azam Rwanda Premier League as they won the 29th game to seal the title. The League is left with one game to end the season and make a total of 30 days.
They won the title after beating Kirehe FC 4-0. At the Kirehe stadium, Kirehe had minimal chances to score but the Rayon shot-stopper was steady to ensure a fifth clean sheet in his last eight games.
Burundian striker, Jules Ulimwengu who doubles as the best scorer of the league with 19 goals, scored a double-goal Michael Sarpong sealed the victory with the other two goals.
Jules scored at the 25th minute before Michael at the 40th minute to give Rayon Sports a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time.
At the 74th minute, Thierry Manzi directed a curve towards Jules Ulimwengu who scored the third goal for Rayon Sports.
When the whistle sounded at the 90th minute, Rayon Sports manager Oliveira Robertinho and his staff joined the players on the pitch. It was clear, the Brazilian had secured his historical domestic league title for Rayon Sports.
Speaking to the press at the end of the game, Oliveira said “this is a historical night, at some point, we were written off the title race, but we kept fighting. This is proof that in football, nothing is impossible”
The boys of Oliveira won their ninth league title with a total of 69points in 29 matches played this season. It is the third since 2013.
Rayon Sports are left with one match to be played on June 1, 2019, against Marines FC at Stade de Kigali.
They hold a seven point lead over second placed APR who hosted Espoir at Kigali stadium same Friday. The Rayons will represent Rwanda in the CAF champions league next season.
