25_year_old Nigerian International Asisat Lamina Oshoala, has expressed her dissatisfaction to CAF’s decision to cancel the 2020 African Women’s cup of Nations.

CAF’s executive committee met on June 30, 2020 through video conference and amongst the several decisions taken, was that cancelling the 2020 African Women’s cup of Nations and announcing the start of the African Women’s champions league in 2021.

CAF’s decision to cancel the AWCON, has sparked diverse reactions, with some pundits describing it a backward step as far as the growth of the women’s game in the continent is concern.

Super Falcons forward, Asisat Lamina Oshoala, who is a four times AWCON winner with the Nigerian senior women’s team, had now taken to the social media, to express her discontentment with the decision.

“Other competitions POSTPONED but AWCON “CANCELLED” thank you once again for making us realize women’s football isn’t important to you”, Oshoala wrote on her Twitter page.

She continued,
“congratulations on dragging us back AGAIN.Adios 👋🏾to all the women National teams in Africa, see y’all in 2022”.

The FC Barcelona Femení forward ended with a hastag calling on CAF to “PrioritizeWomensFootball #NoExcuse.

Asisat Oshoala’s tweet

Oshoala’s tweet was retweeted by South African Goalkeeper, Kaylin Swart, who added the caption “We tire of it”

Before the Coronavirus pandemic brought football activities to standstill, Qualifiers for the 2020 AWCON were slated for April and June 2020. No host country for the was chosen for the competition, after the initial host, The Republic of Congo, had withdrew from host it.

Asisat Oshoala and the Super Falcons of Nigeria are the current holders and most successful country in the history of the competition. They will now wait till 2022 to defend the crown they won in Ghana in 2018.
