Nigeria’s head coach, Gernot Rohr has confirmed that super Eagles skipper, John Mikel Obi will sit out of Saturday’s AFCON 8th clash against the indomitable lions of Cameroon, in Alexandria.
32 year old John Michael Nchekwube Obinna made a sensational return into the Nigerian Squad in prelude to the AFCON, and has played two of Nigeria’s three games in the AFCON this far. He played 58 minutes in their 1#0 win over Burundi, but was an unused substitute against Guinea Bissau, before playing 59 minutes, in his sides surprise 2#0 lost to Madagascar. Against Madagascar, Mikel Obi was pulled out for what appeared to be an injury, but now super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has confirmed that he will not play a part in his sides clash against harsh rivals Cameroon, on Saturday. Speaking during his pre_match presser in Alexandria this Friday, Rohr said ““I don’t think he (Mikel) will be ready to play tomorrow because of the injury”.
Nigeria will however welcome back Collins
Jamilu, who has recovered from Injury, though Gernot Rohr insist he will definitely be on the bench.
The Nigerian tactician will still have a very competitive group to select against Cameroon, though he admitted that Cameroon has one of the best teams in the AFCON. He also hinted that it is a must win Nigeria, so as to prove that their 2#0 lost to Madagascar, was an accident.
This Saturday’s game will be the 23rd direct confrontation between Nigeria and Cameroon in all competitions and Nigeria boast a record of 11 wins and seven draws, while Cameroon has managed just four wins the super Eagles, but three of Cameroon’s four wins, came in crucial AFCON games.
