Former Indomitable lions captain, Stephane Mbia Etoundi, had been blocked in Yaounde, Cameroon, and risk missing the opening games of the Chinese super league.
The 33_year_Old former Hebei China and Wuhan Zall FC midfielder joined Shanghai Greenland Shenhua in January as a free agent, and in a recent interview with french media outlet RFI, disclosed that his club is waiting for him to resume training on April 14.
Unfortunately for Stephane Mbia, it is difficult for him to leave Cameroon at moment, given that the Cameroon government recently outlined a series of measures to curb the spread of the Coronavirus, amongst which was closing national borders and suspending international flights.
“The club ( Shanghai Greenland Shenhua) is waiting for me on April 14, to resume training”, the Midfielder told Radio France International from his base in yaounde.
The two times Europa league winner with FC Seville added that ““I came to Cameroon to apply for a visa to return to China. But the borders were closed when I arrived. ”
A closure implemented on March 18 by the Cameroonian government and recently extended for 15 days. The closure of the national borders could deprive Mbia of the start of the season with his new team. “The championship restarts in May, measures have been taken in China. And I am stuck in Cameroon because the territory is closed.”
For the past three weeks that Stephane Mbia has been confined to his home in Yaounde, he says he has been following a physical preparation program sent to him by his club. Chinese super league clubs have resumed training, following a decline in the number of Coronavirus cases in China, where the various broke out. China recently went a day without recording a single dead for the first time since Coronavirus outbreak in late 2019, and activities are back to normal in Wuhan, that was once the epicenter of the Coronavirus. Earlier, the DailyMail reported that The Chinese FA is ‘set to restart Chinese Super League on April 18’.
Shanghai Greenland Shenhua finished the 2019 Super League, on the 13th position, and will be Stephane Mbia’s third club in China, after he has had spells with Hebei China and Wuhan Zall FC.
The Former Cameroon international has a bulk of experience, in a staggering career that has taken him to France, England, Spain and Turkey. His experience will be a big addition for Shanghai Greenland Shenhua, as they eye one of the top spots in the Chinese super league.
