Chia Leku Gareth

sports writer, Cameroon.

Goalkeeper Chia Leku Gareth made his league one debut for Yong sports Academy  of Bamenda in their 1#0 defeat to Tonnerre Kalara club in Mbankomo on Sunday afternoon.

It might have been his maiden appearance in the top tier championship, but was actually his second time being within the sticks for YOSA, after he first introduced himself during a Cameroon cup game last season against Cotonsport at the FECAFOOT center in Odza.

Unfortunately all his two games with YOSA have ended in defeats, but his eye catching performance against TKC showed signs of a promising future for the  University games gold medalist with the university of Bamenda.

Gareth pulled a series of fine saves to keep YOSA alive in an action packed first 15 minutes, where TKC dominated proceedings. The youngster looked assured between the sticks and his well timed outing to stop experienced Gael Gregoire Nkama in a one on one shortly before half time, won the admiration of many.

He could not in anyway be blamed for Sergeo ledoux’s goal, as it came from a set piece poorly dealt with by the defenders.

Speaking afterward, Gareth was delighted for making his league one debut, though he bemoans the results.

“The coaches gave me the confidence today and I did my best to defend the colours of the team, unfortunately we conceded a careless goal and lost the game but I will keep working hard and hoping for better days ahead”, said the shot stopper.

He added ” this is my first game in the elite one championship so I was happy”.

Comparing his league’s debut, to his previous game against Cotonsport in the Cameroon cup, Gareth said he is determined to make the goal post his own “That Cameroon cup game was the only match I played last season. This season I came determined to work hard and take the number one position”.

YOSA has had Lot’s of difficulties in the goalkeeping compartment this season, where both Fuh Blaise and Tanon Stephane have all had nightmarish moments. Should Chia Gareth build from his performance against TKC, then he can be the man to salvage YOSA’s goalkeeping woes.
