The Cameroon league one Championship just like any major championship in the world, is on recess following the outbreak of the Coronavirus. Before the activities of the league were suspended in mid March 2020, 28 playing days had already been completed, with just six match days left. As clubs continue to observe the “Coronavirus break”, it is important to revisit some key facts of the 28 playing days.
Today, kick442.com takes interest in some major winless runs record in the league this far. It has been a rollercoaster ride for some teams this far, as they have at a certain point been at the top of their game, and at one point ran out of form. This piece will bring you instances, where teams have gone six games and more, without a win.
Out of the 18 clubs taking part in the Cameroon top flight, nine teams have each witnessed a run of six games and above without a win, while nine other teams, notably league leaders, PWD of Bamenda, YOSA, Canon, APEJES, Colombe, Feutcheu, Stade Renard, Dragon and Avion, have never gone above five winless run.
SIX GAMES WINLESS RUN
Union de Mouvement Sportive of Loum, and Bamboutos, falls in this category. December 2019 was indeed a poor one for UMS, as the defending champions suffered four defeats (to Feutcheu, Bamboutos, Fovu, and APEJES), picking up just two draws against Cotonsport and Panthere. The period that ran from December 04, 2019, only ended on January 12, 2020, following UMS’ 2#1 win over TKC. From February 12, to March 05, 2020, Bamboutos FC of Mbouda recorded a whopping five draws against Canon, Panthere, FOVU, APEJES, TKC and one defeat against Eding sport. Pange Lobe’s lone goal against PWD in Limbe on Sunday March 08, 2020, ended that run.
SEVEN GAMES WINLESS RUN
Eding sport, Fovu and Panthere sportive have all gone on a seven game winless run this season. Between November 20, 2019 and December 15, 2019, Panthere sportive of Nde failed to pick up a win, as they suffered three defeats to Avion, Fovu and Colombe, and four draws against Stade Renard, Eding Sport, YOSA, and PWD. Meanwhile from November 6, to December 04, 2019, Fovu club of Baham suffered similar fate, with five defeats (against Feutcheu, Bamboutos, Cotonsport, AVION, and Canon, and two draws against Fortuna and Colombe.
For Eding sport, their seven games winless series ran from December 22, to 11 February 2020, with six defeats (against YOSA, Colombe, Avion, Fovu, Feutcheu and Union) and one draw against UMS. The run was cut off on February 16, with a 2#1 win over Fortuna.
EIGHT GAMES WINLESS RUN
Cotonsport, and TKC have all been in this series.
Tonnerre Kalara Club has won just one of their last 10 league games, and went 31 days without a win. From a 0#1 defeat to Union Sportive of Douala on February 02 to a zero all tie against Feutcheu on March 04, 2020. Six defeats and two draws in that period.
Surprisingly, heavyweights, cotonsport of Garoua also had a similar run from January 12, till February 23. Only a narrow 1#0 win over Dragon on March 01, 2020, savaged situations for the cotonites, after they had five draws, and three defeats (against Panthere, Colombe and Union).
10 GAMES WINLESS RUN
Union Sportive of Douala is driving solo in this category, which is the second longest winless run in the league this far. From November 24, 2019, till 12 January 2020, the Nassara Gamakai failed to pick a single win, and coach Daniel Wallindjum paid the price for that poor run, as he was shown the door and Richard Towa took over. For close to two months, Union suffered five defeats and five draws, and was almost in the relegation zone on the league’s table. A 2#0 win over Dragon on match day 18, ended that series, and was also Richard Towa’s first win as Union’s coach.
12 GAMES WINLESS RUN
It is a record that that A.S Fortuna is keeping, and will surely keep it till the end of the season. From November 03, to December 18 (46 days), Fortuna suffered seven defeats, and five draws, picking up just five points out of a possible 36. That series which ended with a 1#0 win over Canon on Match day 15, saw Fortuna sitting bottom of the league’s table, but their upturn in form which has seen them winning their last three games, with 11 goals scored and Zero conceded, has temporarily taken them out of the relegation zone.
PWD social club of Bamenda so far has the best records, as the Abakwa Boys are the only team that has never gone more than three match days without a win.
