Astres football club of Douala will play in the elite one championship in the 2020/2021 season, no matter what position they will end the current Campaign.
This was made known by the president of the Technical Transitional committee running the Cameroon professional league, Aboubakar Alim Konate, during a press briefing on Thursday, at FECAFOOT’s head office in Tsinga.
Astres of Douala also known as the Brazilians of Bepanda, was relegated to the elite two championship before the start of the current Campaign, after a series of litigation issues, pitting them against PWD Social club of Bamenda.
But now Aboubakar Alim Konate has disclosed that the case was eventually ruled in favour of Astres, but the decision came late for Astres to be reinstated in the league one Championship, and officials of the Douala based club agreed to continue playing in the league two championship, and will regain their league one status next season.
“In the case of Astres of Douala, when the decision came out, we analysed the situation with the members of the technical transitional committee. We had waited for the decision for long, and the competition had already started and at the stage where the competition was, it was impossible to reinstate Astres of Douala in the elite one championship”, said Aboubakar Alim Konate.
“if a competition is played up to a certain level and you remove or add a team from the competition, it will have consequences on the classification. So we spoke with officials of Astres, and explained it to them. It was not easy for them, but they finally accepted to play in the elite two. So I congratulate the president of Astres, Charles Kamdem for his maturity and we took the engagement to implement the decision maintaining Astres in the Elite one, next season, no matter their position on the elite two table”.
The reinstatement of Astres of Douala in the top tier, means four teams will be relegated from the league one at the end of the current Campaign, while only two teams will be promoted from the league two championship.
Astres of Douala currently sit in the top half of the league two table, with 20 points and two delay games, and it’s possible for coach Anicet Mbarga Foe and his boys to finish in the top two spots of the league two championship.
Asked if Astres’ guarantee of playing in the elite one championship next year will not open way for match fixing, president Aboubakar Alim Konate says the technical transitional committee is doing everything possible, to protect the credibility of the league.
