Mozambique have topped Group F of the 2021 African Cup of Nations qualifiers after a comfortable 2-0 home win over Rwanda to earn a bright start.

The Mambas are two points ahead of Cameroon and Cape Verde Island who played a goalless draw in Yaounde on Wednesday night.

Edson Sitoe gave the opener for the home side from a converted 28th minute penalty while Stelio Ernesto increased tally to hand Mozambique all three points.

They have the chance to extend their lead when they travel to face Cape Verde Island.

Mozambique are yet to reach a fifth AFCON finals despite several close misses. During the 2013 qualifiers , they reached the final round and beat
Morocco 2–0 in the first leg in Maputo . However, they were beaten 4–0 in
Marrakech four days later. During the
2019 qualifiers the Mambas were only denied by a Guinea-Bissau equiliser in stoppage time at the end of their final
Group K match.

They have participated at four African Cup of Nations finals in 1986,1996, 1998, 2010 but ended up in the group stage in all editions.

Rwanda hope to make amends for their lackluster debut when they host five time African champions Cameroon in Kigali.

The 1996 CECAFA winners are gearing up for rheir first AFCON appearance in 15 years.

The last time they participated was in 2004.
