- Captain Naby Keita is suspended for their next game
- Guinea picked a direct qualification to the eighth final despite having the same number of points as Malawi
The head coach of the Syli National of Guinea Kaba Diawara, has disclosed that his side will be without two key players in their round of 16 game.
The Syli National booked their place in the eighth final despite their one to two defeat to Zimbabwe in yaounde on Tuesday evening, as they finished second in group B, with four points, same number of points as Malawi.
Guinea’s captain Naby Keita picked up a yellow card deep in added time, we he tried to force goalkeeper Talbert Shumba to quick restart play for Zimbabwe. The yellow card was Keita’s second of the tournament, meaning he will miss their next game.
“It is very sad news for us. Naby (Keita) was doing well at this AFCON. He scored a very nice goal. Now we have lost our captain who is our best player. For Issiaga Sylla, we have to wait for results of Medical examinations. So apart from the defeat we have two bad news. We will try to treat the injured players and see which ones we can recuperate and also wait for our opponents for the next round,” Kaba Diawara told the press.
“I think we will play the eighth for him (Naby Keita). He has given a lot since the start of the competition. He is one of the best players in Africa and he has proven that with a good performance in our last two games. Then he scored a very good goal today. Physically he is in top form. We will do without him, I will try to find a solution, possibly giving a chance to the others. So if we succeed in going to the quarter final, then he will be back, Diawara added .
On his evaluation of the game against Zimbabwe, Kaba Diawara accused the Warriors of deliberately refusing to play.
“We slept in the first half because Zimbabwe refused to play. When they scored the first goal, we tried, but couldn’t get the best. Then when they scored the second, we tried to change things up and we scored one goal but the damage was already done. Congratulations to them, they took us well and we couldn’t give the good reaction.
