Cameroon international, Alain Thierry Akono Akono, is not regretting his decision to abstain from Cameroon’s squad for the upcoming African Nations championship, as he chose to concentrate on his professional career.
Akono recently completed a move from Cameroon league one side AS Fortuna, to Tanzanian Vadacom premier league side, Azam FC. The forward featured in Azam’s 1#0 win over Polisi in their league opener, after he came on in the last 20 minutes of the game.
Thierry Akono had been a part of Cameroon’s intermediate lions who were camping ahead of the CHAN that was initially programmed for April 2020, and was pushed to January 2021 following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic. His move to Tanzania automatically puts an end to his chances of representing Cameroon in the final tournament.
In an exclusive interview with kick442.com crew in Dar es Salaam on Monday after his sides first game of the 2020_2021 season, Akono stated in strong terms that his decision to forgo the CHAN for a move abroad, was a no-brainer.
Asked if he is disappointed with his decision to abandon the quest for a place in Cameroon’s squad for the upcoming African Nations championship, Akono was categorical.
“No no no, I’m not disappointed, first of all, was I sure to be in the final list for the competition? That’s the problem. we can never be sure With things like that”.
“You can not allow a professional contract to wait for the CHAN which you are not even sure of playing it”, Akono added.
His cameo for Azam FC on Monday marked the beginning of a new adventure for the former lion Blessé of Foutouni goal getter, though he was not satisfied with his display.
“I’m not satisfied with my performance today, because it was my first match. It is true that it is a new championship for me and I think as time goes on everything will be ok.
“When you are in a new team, it’s normal for you to have the pressure, especially when it’s a team playing the first role in the championship and when you are a foreigner, you need to prove why the team brought you”.
After his nine goals helped AS Fortuna survived relegation in the 2019_2020 season, Akono is aiming high this season.
“My ambitions this season is to give my best for my new team and see if I can finish amongst the top scorers”.
Alain Thierry Akono Akono and his Azam FC teammates will be back in action on Friday afternoon, when they host Coastal Union in a day two fixture at the Azam Complex in Chamazi.
