▪️ Cameroon came from behind to defeat Burkina Faso
▪️ Aboubakar Vincent scored twice from the penalty spot
The Indomitable lions of Cameroon have beaten the Stallions of Burkina Faso 2#1, in the opening game of the Total Energies African cup of Nations 2021.
After the colorful opening ceremony at the 60,000 seater Olembe Stadium, the stage was set for the indomitable lions of Cameroon and the Stallions of Burkina Faso, to set to ball rolling for the 33rd Edition of the AFCON.
Less than a minute into the game, Burkin Faso’s Steeve Yago was booked for a foul on Fai collins. The lions then took control of the first quarter of the game, with Vincent Aboubakar shooting wide at the seventh minute, from a near perfect Fai collins pass.
10 minutes on, Karl Toko Ekambi rounded goalkeeper Hervé Koffi, but his efforts went way off target.
The Burkinabè’s stepped up their game, and a their counter attack at the 24th minute paid off, when Quevilly_Rouen’s midfielder Gustavo Fabrice Sangaré headed pass André Onana from close range, from a Bertrand Traoré delivery.
The last quarter of the half was more eventful than expected. Stallions defender, Malo Guira was booked for a hash tackle on Ngamaleu, but the turning point came at the 36th minute, when shouts for a penalty from Cameroon were initially waved away by Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal, before the VAR notified him to have a second look from the pitch side monitor.
A penalty was later awarded to Cameroon, as Vincent Aboubakar drew the game level.
Cameroon’s Jérôme Onguene rough tackled Tapsoba and was booked, but there was still time for more , as Seattle Sounders’ left back, Nouhou Tolo ran into the Burkinabè’s box, and was fouled for Cameroon’s second penalty, as Aboubakar Vincent put the lions ahead before the break.
When hostilities resumed for the second half, Aboubakar thought he had extended Cameroon’s lead, but his goal was chalked off for offside.
Coach Antonio Conceição then opted for fresh blood, with Clinton Njie and Choupo Moting coming on for Toko Ekambi and Kunde Malong respectively.
For Burkina Faso, Adoul Tapsoba and Cyrille Bayala were replaced by Mohamed Konaté and Zakaria Sanogo.
The indomitable lions of Cameroon created more chances going forward, but Clinton Njie, and Zambo Anguissa, were all guilty of wayward shooting.
2017 AFCON Most Valuable player was brought on for Moumi Ngamaleu, before both captains, Bertrand Troare of Burkina Faso and Vincent Aboubakar of Cameroon, were replaced by Boureima Bande and Yvan Neyou respectively.
Hopes of a late drama were far fetched, as Cameroon held on and secured all three points, to temporarily go top of Group A.
