The intermediate Lions of Cameroon have against all odds reach the quarter finals of the Total CHAN 2020. The boys of coach Martin Ndtoungou Mpile played a zero all tie against Burkina Faso to record their 5th point and finish second in Group A.
Their second position finish means that, the lions will travel to Douala to play at the Japoma Stadium.
KEY MOMENTS
First Half
The intermediate Lions of Cameroon started the match on a very good footing with Joel Ngon A Tiati recorded the first shot on target which was saved by Burkina Faso’s goalkeeper, Babayoure Aboubacar.
Few seconds later, another shot was recorded by Cameroon through Serge Andoulou but his shot went off target.
Burkina Faso came close to scoring at the 8th minute of play Mohamed Ouattara’s strike went inches off target.
At the 10th minute, goalkeeper Haschou Kerrido was called into action by Sami Hien whose shot was well saved.
The first quarter of the match was dominated by the Stallions of Burkina Faso.
Thierry Tchuente came close to scoring for Cameroon at the 21st minute but goalkeeper Babayoure Aboubacar was swift to get off his line and win possession for his team.
Mohamed Ouattara came close to scoring again but his header was saved by Haschou Kerrido.
At the 30th minute, Serge Andoulou suffered an ankle injury which forced coach Martin Ndtoungou Mpile to substitute him with Steve Keuni.
Both teams will then struggle to to impose their play style with Burkina Faso winning most of the airborne dwells as both teams settle for a virgin all tie at half time.
Second Half
The intermediate Lions of Cameroon started the second half just like they did in the first, calling goalkeeper Babayoure Aboubacar into action.
Goalkeeper Haschou Kerrido was called into action from a free kick. He was well placed to send the ball out for a corner kick.
At the 61st minute, both coaches conducted a substitution each. Mohamed Ouattara made way for Wendyam Yannick Pognongo while Thierry Tchuente was replaced by Gabriel Penda Fils.
Joel Ngon A Tiati at the 68th minute had a rare opportunity to give Cameroon the lead but his weak shot was saved by goalkeeper Babayoure Aboubacar.
Coach Martin Ndtoungou Mpile at the 77th minute brought in Emmanuel Joel Kofana in place of Fabrice Onana so as to have some stability in midfield.
The intermediate Lions will then play for time in the rest of the match to book a quarter finals ticket.
